Global Week of Action

What is the Global Week of Action?

The Global Week of Action is an international campaign to draw attention to the destructive impacts of open net-cage salmon aquaculture worldwide. Years of scientific research has built a global body of evidence that clearly shows open net-cage salmon farms cause ecosystem harm everywhere they are located.

In British Columbia, Norway, Scotland and Chile -- all major salmon farming regions -- citizens face myriad harmful impacts that are undermining wild fisheries and ecosystem health. The Global Week of Action is about these concerned citizens and groups around the world, all asking for change that will help protect wild fish, human well-being and marine ecosystems.

For more information, visit the Global Week of Action international website.

The Global Week of Action in BC

During the last Global Week of Action, November 9 – 14th 2009, CAAR called on BC communities to request town hall meetings with their MPs to ask what they’re doing to protect wild salmon and ocean ecosystems from the impacts of net-cages. Here are just a few of the actions that took place across British Columbia:

  • Town Hall Meeting with Jean Crowder, MP Nanaimo-Cowichan.
  • Screenings of the new documentary 'Farmed Salmon Exposed: The Global Reach of the Norwegian Salmon Farming Industry' by Damien Gillis. Click here  to view an excerpt of the film.
  • CAAR’s Wild Salmon Narrows supporters sent daily emails to Minister Shea, Premier Campbell, their MP and/or MLA, asking them what they’re doing to address the various impacts of open net-cage aquaculture.

The Next Global Week of Action

The fifth annual Global Week of Action will take place in fall 2010 and we will be sure to let you know how to get involved. Together we can hold our governments to account and achieve protection of wild salmon, healthy oceans, and a sustainable future for salmon aquaculture worldwide.
