Protect Wild Salmon, Ask for Lasting Solutions

Scientific studies from around the world have produced overwhelming evidence that sea lice from salmon farms are killing wild salmon. Watershed Watch's on-line video clearly illustrates how this happens and the grave implications.

The sea lice epidemic must be stopped.

Please help stand up for wild salmon. Let British Columbia's Ministers of Environment and Technology know that the weight of scientific evidence demands their immediate action.

Closed containment technology provides a protective barrier between farmed salmon and surrounding marine ecosystems.  Supporting investment in closed containment can end the devastating impacts of open net-cages and set the standard for other salmon farming nations.

By clicking 'send' below, you can fax Ministers Penner and Chong directly. Our voices together can achieve lasting  solutions!

Dear Recipient

Scientific research from North America and Europe indicate sea lice are a problem inherent to farming salmon in open net-cages. Sea lice spread to wild salmon where infection can prove fatal, especially for outmigrating juveniles. This deadly dynamic is shown in a new on-line video by Watershed Watch Salmon Society.

Sea lice infection is preventable – a change in salmon farming technology from open net-cages to closed containment would provide the needed barrier between farmed and wild fish. If nothing meaningful is done science indicates that we will lose our wild salmon very soon.

The loss of wild Pacific salmon would be an environmental and economic catastrophe. Over 100 species rely on wild salmon for food. Thousands of jobs and over a billion dollars in revenue generated by fishing and tourism rely on the coastal ecosystem that wild salmon support.

Open net-cage salmon farms and the sea lice they harbour simply cannot coexist with wild salmon. Closed containment systems offer a lasting solution and a sustainable future for coastal communities, the salmon aquaculture industry, fisheries, and wild salmon. A transition to closed containment is essential.

Make British Columbia a global leader. Invest in a commercial scale closed containment fund to jump start a coast wide transition to more sustainable salmon farming practices.

I look forward to your actions on this critically important issue.
