Farmed and Dangerous
CAAR Markets Campaign

No one has been able to make the salmon farming industry act responsibly. Over the last decade numerous committees have looked into the impacts of salmon farming on BC's oceans and wild fish and have recommended a range of solutions from moratoriums on expansion to an industry wide transition to closed containment within five years.

Despite this, the governments in power and the salmon farming industry continue to ignore recommendations and keep on with business as usual practices that jeopardize the health of wild salmon and our oceans with sea lice epidemics, escapes and waste.

In 2002, the Coastal Alliance for Aquaculture Reform launched the Farmed and Dangerous Markets Campaign to educate retailers, chefs and consumers about the devastating impacts of farmed salmon production.

Sine then, CAAR has been pursing solutions that can lead to a full transition away from open net-cage salmon farming. CAAR supports the use of ocean-based closed containment farms.

Until the industry converts to more environmentally responsible closed-containment systems, don’t buy farmed salmon!

By insisting on sustainable products, retailers and consumers can provide a powerful incentive for salmon farmers to improve the current harmful practices.

We encourage retailers like Safeway to do the right thing and stop selling farmed salmon until it is produced sustainably. When powerful companies take a stand and refuse to sell a product because of how it is produced, they send the aquaculture industry and government the message to reform environmentally harmful farming practices.

CAAR is working with a large network of retailers, restaurant owners and chefs across Canada and the U.S. Over 160 restaurants and retailers have  signed onto the Farmed and Dangerous campaign and are committed to not selling farmed salmon.

CAAR has delivered presentations across North America to inform   consumers about the environmental risks associated with farmed salmon. We also work with a global network of allies to facilitate informational events and days of action to engage the public in communicating to government and industry that the impacts of salmon farming on wild salmon and ocean health are not tolerable.

Get involved

You can become involved in this movement toward sustainability. Visit your local grocery store and favourite restaurant and strike up a conversation with the manager about why you will not buy farmed salmon. Send a fax to Safeway - a major retailer who understands the impacts of this industry on BC's coastal ecosystems and still refuses to stop selling farmed salmon.
