There are presently over 85 open net cage fish farms currently operating in the coastal waters of British Columbia.
 These farms have huge impacts and the problems will only increase if the open net-cage industry continues to expand.

Wild Salmon Coalition Takes Province to Court
Scientist, Alexandra Morton, along with  commercial and sport fishing associations are challenging BC's right to regulate fish farms in court.Their petition argues that Canada's Constitution prevents delegation of this regulatory authority to the province. Read more.

Wild Salmon Rescue May Go Ahead
Concerned scientist, Alexandra Morton, planned to transport juvenile salmon past salmon farms to protect them from sea lice. Fisheries and Oceans Canada have turned down her permit request, blocking the rescue operation.

Following Safeway's decision this week to suspend purchasing of Chilean farmed salmon, because of massive disease outbreaks, CAAR is calling on the grocer to phase out fall farmed salmon.

Minister Bell pledged “increased chemical treatments” of lice-bearing farmed salmon—despite calls for farm-free migration corridors and safe technology, and despite mounting concern over the effectiveness and abuse of such chemicals.

 In a major blow to the salmon farming industry, a BC government-funded research group says it now accepts a recent scientific study that warns of mass extinctions of wild pink salmon on the central coast due to salmon farming.  Read more.

New data published in SCIENCE shows wild Pink salmon in BC's Broughton Archipelago will be driven to extinction within four years because of the deadly impact of sea lice from salmon farms.
